Warm inland areas this weekend

High pressure will intensify over the western states this weekend. This will result in an off shore flow that will bring warmer than normal temperatures to the valleys.

A weak "eddy" will produce late night and morning low clouds and fog along portions of the coast. This will hold down some of the daytime temperatures in these areas over the weekend.

Some forecast high temperatures on Saturday...

Smoke filters the sunshine for some

(Smoky "pre"-sunrise - Tuesday, June 26th, 2007)

Smoke from the "White Fire" near Rosamond has been filtering the sun for some over portions of the high desert region of San Bernardino county.

There's been reports at times of the smoke as far east as portions of southern Nevada/northwest Arizona and southwest Utah.

The fire is 60% contained as of late Wednesday at 11,300 acres.
12 homes and 6 outbuildings have been destroyed.

The fire threat is expected to increase by the Fourth of July as an offshore flow is expected to develop over the southland. Temperatures may reach around 90 for mid city LA and in the lower 100s over some interior valleys.

There's even an outside risk of an afternoon or evening "dry" thunderstorm over the southern mountains and portions of the high desert region on the fourth and even a few days beyond that.

(Decaying evening Thunderstorm - August, 2006)

NOAA's National Weather Service has declared this week (June 24 - 30th) "Lightning Safety Awareness Week".

Here in the southland... on average most of our lightning strikes occur during the so called monsoon season (typically runs from mid July through late August).

Much of these thunderstorms occur during the afternoon and evening hours over the mountains and deserts. Once in a great while... one of them will spill over in the valleys or coastal plains.

In the United States, there are an estimated 25 million lightning flashes each year. During the past 30 years, lightning killed an average of 66 people per year . This is more than the average of 65 deaths per year caused by tornadoes.

Remember...
When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!
