By Monday afternoon... the tstorm coverage will expand west/northwestward into the mountains of Los Angeles/Ventura counties and the Antelope Valley.
Don't be too surprise (especially on Monday) to see a stray tstorm make into some inland valley areas.

Saturday, July 21, 2007

Increasing moisture over the southland mountains/deserts this weekend

(Cumulonimbus clouds - at sunset)
Moisture caught up in a southeast flow over the southern/eastern portions of southern California will lead to a small chance of afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms this weekend.
This flow may increasing by the early part of the upcoming week... due to several easterly wave embedded in the southeast flow.
Still the best chances of afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms will be the far south and eastern sections.

Friday, July 20, 2007

Warm temperatures and a risk of thunderstorms through the weekend

(A few pre-dawn clouds)

An increasing in moisture through the weekend will lead to a slight chance of mainly afternoon/evening showers or thunderstorms over the southland mountain and desert areas. There is a very small risk of one of these storms making westward into the valleys (mainly Inland Empire and San Diego county).

Meanwhile... temperatures will be on the warm side for the next couple of days as the air flow turns more off shore.

Temperatures may reach or exceed the 100 degree mark in the interior valleys.

Thursday, July 12, 2007

Thursday outlook

(Avalon, Catalina Island - August 1983)

High pressure aloft and a dry southwest flow is currently over the southland.

This will result in mostly sunny skies...except patchy morning low clouds and fog along portions of the coastal plain on Thursday.

Meanwhile... a return to more muggy southeast flow is on tap for Friday and Saturday. This pattern will lead to warmer temperatures and a chance of mainly afternoon/evening thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts...with even a slight risk of a storm drifting westward off the mountains into some of the inland valleys.

Dry thunderstorms possible over some mountain and desert areas on Wednesday

(Storm clouds/marble overlay)

Wednesday's storm focus will be on the mountains of San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego counties. There's a slight possibility of a dry storm or two over the far eastern mountains of L.A. county and the Antelope valley.

The storms over the above mentioned areas will likely produce... gusty winds to around 40 mph and dangerous cloud to ground lightning strikes... but very little or no in the way of rainfall.

Meanwhile... over the coastal plain and the valleys (including Los Angeles). Expect... gloomy day... with morning low clouds and fog...then only partial afternoon clearing to near the coast.

Slight risk of thunderstorms on Tuesday

(Current Wator Vapor Imagery)

***Updated: 4:33pm/pdt, Tuesday, July 10th, 2007***

A south/southeast "monsoon" flow will lead to a slight risk of mainly "Dry" thunderstorm activity over the southland through Tuesday night.

Primary threats from any thunderstorm activity that does develop will be... locally gusty winds and cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

Very little or no rainfall expected.

There will be a continued risk of mainly afternoon and early evening thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts through the week.

A disturbance may enhance the instability and lead to greater chance of thunderstorms over the far eastern portions of the southern California desert areas on late Wednesday morning through early Wednesday evening.

Monday, July 09, 2007

Chance of thunderstorms next couple of days

***Updated at: 2:40pm/pdt, Monday, July 9th, 2007***

A weak monsoon flow will develop early this week over the southland and much of the southwest region.

This will result in showers and thunderstorms (mainly over the mountain/desert locations) through at least mid-week.

A weak disturbance will pass over the southland late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. This will spark a few thunderstorms over the southland (mainly later Monday night through Tuesday morning.

There will be a continued risk of showers or thunderstorms (mainly over the mountains and deserts) Monday afternoon through Wednesday.

Sunday, July 08, 2007

Beginning of the monsoon season!?

(Cumulonimbus clouds at sunset)

Increasing monsoon moisture will bring isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours over the mountains of Los Angeles...Ventura...San Bernardino...Riverside and San Diego counties for the next few days.

At this time... the best chance of showers and thunderstorms will be on Tuesday...as a weak disturbance tracks across the southland.

On Tuesday... there will be greater areal coverage the tstorm activity...with a chance of thunderstorms over the deserts and even a slight chance of a thunderstorm drifting westward off the mountains into the valleys of the IE.

For the coastal plain and valley areas... expect night and morning low clouds and fog for the next couple days along with cool temperatures along the coast... still above normal temperatures for the valleys...especially the valleys of the Inland Empire.

Hot and dry conditions this week

(Lone Cirrus cloud)

Hot and dry conditions for the southland through the week.

The hottest temperatures will occur over the valleys...where temperatures will approach the 110 degree mark on the 4th of July and Thursday.

For mid-city Los Angeles... temperatures will be in the upper 80s to around 90 through Thursday... with the hottest day expected today (Tuesday).

(Sunrise - Sunday, July 1st, 2007)

Hot temperatures...especially inland areas this week.

Temperatures are expected to approach the 110 degree mark in the valleys of the IE and in the 100s in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys by the Fourth of July.

For mid-city Los Angeles... it appears the hottest days will occur on the Fourth and on Thursday...when temperatures will be around 90 during the afternoon hours.

Even the immediate coastal areas will see temperatures around 80 degrees.

Driest rain season on record for the southland

(Colorful pre-sunrise over the Mojave Desert)

2006-2007 rain season came to an end Saturday over the southland.

This was the driest rain season on record for many locations...including downtown Los Angeles (which only recieved 3.21" of rain)

Records for Downtown L.A. date back to 1877 (a total of 130 rain seasons).

No sign of any rain in the future for the southland (short-term or long term).

As for the pending heat wave for southern California.

A strong off shore flow produced by a large dome of high pressure over the interior west...will likely bring record-breaking heat to inland southern California by Tuesday and likely to continue for much of the remainder of the week.

It is possible... some inland valley locations may break the 110 degree mark on the 4th of July or on Thursday.

The beaches will be warm also... in the upper 70s to the lower 80s for the most part.

Mid-city Los Angeles will likely see mid week daytime temperatures in the upper 80s to the lower 90s.
