Wet Saturday

(Cajon Pass - Thursday, September 20th, 2007)
Finally... the upper level "Cut-Off" low pressure that has been parked south of Pt. Conception is beginning to move east.
This system will continue to bring scattered showers and isolated convection across the southland Saturday morning...then will decreasing spotty showers during the afternoon hours.
Flash Flood Watches remain in effect for the 2006 and '07 burn areas of Los Angeles... Ventura and Santa Barbara counties for the morning hours. There is high potential of debris or mud flows in these areas.
Additionally... Flash Flood Watches remain in effect for the morning hours for the mountains of San Bernardino and the Santa Ana mountain areas.
Same thing applies with these areas... mud or debris flows are possible in the recent burn areas... Such as the Butler #2 fire area near Fawnskin/Big Bear Lake.
As for the convection (thunderstorms)... Isolated thunderstorms are possible...especially over the coastal waters and coastal plain.
Thunderstorms will have the potential of producing... locally gusty winds... brief heavy downpours... small hail and cloud-to-surface lightning strikes.
Additionally... brief waterspouts or funnels are possible over the coastal waters and immediate coastline.
Snow showers are possible at or above 7,000' today over the mountains of Ventura... Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
1 to 3" snowfall amounts are possible above 7,500' in the mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Little or no accumulation expected over the San Bernardino's.
Finally... due to rough seas... a high risk of rip currents along the immediate coastal waters of Orange and San Diego counties on Saturday.

Rain and mountain snow across the southland on Friday/Friday night

***Updated early Friday morning, September 21st, 2007***

An early season Pacific storm system will bring unsettled conditions to the region through Saturday.

Showers will gradually increase over southern California as Friday progresses.

The bulk of the rain will likely fall during Friday evening through early Saturday morning over the southland.

Some forecast rainfall amounts...
Coastal plain (LA. county northward): 0.25 to 0.75"
Coastal plain (OC southward): around 0.25"
Coastal valleys (north): 0.25 to 075"
Coastal valleys (San Diego county): 0.10 to 0.25"
Inland valleys: 0.50 to 075"
Inland valleys (San Diego county): 0.10 to 0.25"
Mountains: 0.75" to 1.25"
...Locally higher amounts on south/southwest facing mountain slopes and foothills.
Deserts: under 0.10"

Due the rains...and the potential for flooding and debris flows... NOAA's National Weather Service Forecast Office in Rancho Bernardo has issued a Flash Flood Watch from 2pm pdt Friday afternoon through Saturday morning over the mountains of San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego and Orange counties.

NOAA's/NWS in Oxnard has also posted a Flash Flood Watch for the inland burn areas of Catalina Island through late Friday night.

Additionally... there will be slight chance of thunderstorms through the period...mainly coastal/valley locations.

Some thunderstorms will have the potential of producing... gusty winds, brief locally heavy rains, small hail and cloud to ground lightning. A brief waterspout or tornado is also possible along the coast.

Finally... snow showers are possible at the higher elevations of the mountain areas. It's not out of the question to see a light dusting of snow over the ridgetops and peaks.

Rare "wet & cold" storm to move into the southland late week

An unusually rare event... a winter like storm will affect the southland late this week with rain, wind and high elevation snows.

The southland on Thursday will begin to see the first effects of the storm system will be a deep marine layer (which will even sock in the mountains)...additionally gusty winds winds will blow over the mountains and deserts through Thursday.

Additionally with deep marine... will be a slight chance of light rain or drizzle (mainly Trace to 0.01" amounts) through Thursday afternoon.

The main event will come late Thursday through Friday night. As indicated in the above graphic... the upper level low pressure will dive south and should be located just southwest of Pt. Conception by midday Friday. This system will become detached from the main upper level flow over the west and will park just off the coast through Saturday.

Result... will be widespread shower activity across the southland and snow showers possible over the mountains (mainly above the 6,000' level).

Preliminary rainfall forecasts for the southland as follows:
Coastal plain/valleys: 0.25" to 0.75"
Coastal foothills and slopes: 1.00 to 1.25"
Mountains: 0.75 to 1.25"

Some favored west/southwest facing slopes in the San Bernardino mountains and the west/southwest facing slopes in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties may see locally higher amounts.

Along with the likelyhood of rain on Friday and Friday will also come the risk of thunderstorms over the coastal plain and valley areas.

It's not out of the question for waterspouts in the coastal waters or a weak EF 0 Tornado in the coastal plain on Friday.

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Unusually cold storm system for the southland late this week

An unusually cold/wet storm system will track south from the northern Pacific and cut-off the from the main flow by late in the week.

This will first result in a deepening of the marine layer over the coastal/valley areas...extending inland to the lower mountain slopes by early Thursday morning.

Additionally... showers will increase in areal coverage over SoCal by late Thursday afternoon and become widespread by early Friday...then continue through early Saturday morning.

The latest computer models are indicating between 0.25" to 1.00" of rain over the coastal plain and valleys...with possibly locally higher amounts along the foothills and coastal slopes.

With the cold air... snow levels will likely lower between 5,500 to 6,000' over the mountains by early Friday morning.

At this time... it's too early to tell on snowfall accumulations. but it's not out of the question that some snow may accumulate at least on the highest ridges and peaks.

Onshore flow to continue...

(Santa Ynez Mountains)

Onshore flow will continue to produce night and morning low clouds and fog for the next few days...extending into the valleys during the late night and morning hours.

Temperatures will be below seasonal normals for most of the southland this week.

Looking ahead...
An upper level storm system (currently located in the north Pacific) will dip south along the coast and become cut off from the main jet stream...just of the southern California coast.

This will likely result in extensive cloud cover and a slight chance of light rain showers or drizzle come Thursday and Friday...possibly continuing through the weekend.

The marine layer will continue to make it self known over the southland this weekend...especially Saturday night and Sunday morning

The onshore will make for seasonal (comfortable) temperatures...except in the some far interior valley and desert locations where temperatures will be on the warmside.

Moisture creeping into San Diego county will bring a small chance of afternoon and early thunderstorms over the mountains of the county.

The nice weather will continue through the weekend into at least the early part of the coming week!

Thursday, September 06, 2007

What a change!

What a change for the southland...

A fairly strong onshore flow is bringing much cooler temperatures to the region along with night and morning low clouds and fog...extending inland to the valleys.

Some beach areas will struggle over the next few days to get out of the 60s...due to the gloom lingering into to the afternoon hours.

Meanwhile...
most areas will see high temperatures in the 70s...except in the 80s to the middle 90s in the far inland valleys.

As it looks right now... this pattern should persist at least into the middle part of next week!!!

Wednesday, September 05, 2007

Cooler and the night/morning gloom returns to the coast!

Finally after a week of heat... cooler weather has moved over much of the southland.

The cooler air is due to the a broad trough of low pressure over the Pacific NW and at a smaller scale... coastal eddy just off shore of LA/Orange counties.

Over the next few days...into the weekend.

Look for temperatures around 80 degrees or so for downtown LA, upper 60s to the middle 70s at the beaches and in the 80s to the middle 90s out in the valleys.

Night/morning low clouds and fog along the coast...will likely spread into some valley locations (especially coastal valleys) during the late night through mid-morning hours.

Some models are suggesting a "mini" heat wave during the early to middle part of next week... but temperatures will be no where close to the levels they were during the past heat wave episode.

Tuesday, September 04, 2007

Not as hot for the coastal areas on Tuesday!

(Negative, Infrared imagery of a "Mature" Thunderstorm)

The weather pattern that has been bringing the unbearable heat to the region is finally weakeng.

The noticable change on Tuesday will be the cooler temperatures along the coastal plain with forecast high temperatures in the 70s for the most part.

Meanwhile downtown LA will see high temperatures reach 90 and the Hollywood Hills in the middle to upper 90s.

There has been a return to the Marine layer along the OC and San Diego coast early Tuesday morning

A more extensive marine layer is forecast Tuesday night and Wednesday morning reaching inland portions of the coastal plain (including Downtown LA) by late evening.

For the coastal valleys... you will have to wait until Wednesday night and Thursday morning to see the gloom.

As for the thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts... with less humidity and more stable air than during the previous days...there should be less thunderstorm activity Tuesday afternoon/evening... with only 20% areal coverage or so.

Monday, September 03, 2007

Labor Day: Another hot and sticky day

***Updated at: 11:31am/pdt, Labor Day, September 3rd, 2007***

...Another hot and sultry day in the southland.

High pressure over the Arizona will continue to produce an strong off shore flow across SoCal.

The dewpoints will remain high... in the 60s for the most part.

Dewpoints combined with the high temperatures will make for very uncomfortable conditions... especially areas away from the immediate coast.

Some forecast high temperatures on Labor Day...
Downtown LA: around 101 (Record for today: 103 - 1988)

Hollywood Hills: 100 to 108
Van Nuys: around 109
Newhall: near 109
Lancaster: around 104 (Record for today: 108 - 1955)
Anaheim: around 101
San Diego (Lindbergh Airport): around 90 (Record for today: 92 - 1998)

Ontario: around 109 (Record for today 112 - 1955)
Riverside: around 111 (Record for today: 112 - 1955)

***The good news is... the flow will turn more onshore by mid to late week bringing cooler temperatures and a return to the night and morning gloom along the coast!***

Along with the heat/humidity... will come another round of afternoon/evening showers and thunderstorms over the mountains...deserts and the valleys of the IE and San Diego county.

Like the past few days... there will be a continued threat for heavy rains, hail and strong...potentially damaging winds along with frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

The high potential for damaging winds/hail will occur over the Inland Empire's valleys and mountains.

NOAA's NWS has issued a FLASH FLOOD WATCH through early Monday evening for the valleys of the IE and San Diego county and the mountains/deserts of San Bernardino/Orange, Riverside,San Diego, Los Angeles counties...and the mountains of Ventura county.

Sunday, September 02, 2007

Sunday: Heat & Thunder

(Late morning Cumulus clouds, Saturday, September 1st, 2007)

Another hot and stormy day on tap for Sunday.

Scattered thunderstorms are likely to develop over the mountains/deserts by late morning and become widespread during the afternoon and early evening hours.

The greatest areal coverage will be over the Inland Empire and San Diego county's mountain/deserts.

Like the past couple of days... there's a chance some of the thunderstorms make it westward in the valleys of the IE and San Diego county.

The primary threats from the storms will continue to be heavy rains/possible flash flooding... hail... strong/gusty winds and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

As for the heat...
Most coastal/valley locations will see the temperatures rise a couple of degrees from what they were on Saturday.

It will remain muggy too. Dewpoints in the upper 50s to the middle 60s for the most part.

Resulting in heat indices ranging from 106 to 118 in some valley locations Sunday afternoon/early evening.

Like Saturday...
If you plan on cooling off at the beaches... there continues to be a high risk of rip currents along the coastal waters of Ventura... L.A.... Orange and San Diego counties.

Looking ahead...
Keeping our eyes on Tropical storm Henriette!
Depending on the exact track and weather patterns over the southwest U.S..

Henriette may spread moisture into southern California late in the week and over next weekend... resulting in an increase in showers/tstorms over the region.

Stay tuned!!!

Saturday, September 01, 2007

Hot, sticky and continued risk of thunderstorms for the holiday weekend

High pressure near the 4 corners region will bring hot...humid weather to the southland through the holiday weekend.

Moisture in the southeast flow will continue the chances of thunderstorms. There may be an increase in areal coverage and intensity of the thunderstorm activity beginning later Saturday night and continuing through Sunday evening...as an easterly wave tracks westward across the region.

The primary threats from the thunderstorms this weekend,
...Strong & gusty winds, hail, locally heavy downpours and frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.

As for the heat,
...Temperatures on Saturday will likely reach into the middle to upper 90s for downtown LA, upper 90s to the lower 100s inland portions of the OC and in the 100s in all valley locations.

The beaches will see high temperatures on Saturday in the upper 70s to the middle 80s for the most part.
As usual the humidity will make it feel even more uncomfortable.

Temperatures Sunday and Labor day will be a couple of degrees cooler from the forecast highs on Saturday.

By the way,
...If you plan on cooling off at any of the southern California beaches this weekend... beware... there's a high risk of rip currents along the beaches of Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange and San Diego counties.
