Laguna Beach Landslide (June 1st, 2005)

  Time/Location:

The Laguna Beach landslide occurred at apx. 6:51am/pdt Wednesday June 1st, 2005 in the Bluebird Canyon area of Laguna Beach. A 30-acre piece of hillside between 50 to 60 feet deep broke free and fell on the homes below.

Possible factors that lead to the landslides:

  • Heavy rains may have caused slipping between layers of bedrock.
  • Houses were built on or near an ancient landslide area.

...Local officials indicate that it's too earlier to determine the exact cause of the landslide.

Statistics about the Landslide:

  • 22 Homes uninhabitable (of those 22 homes: 15 destroyed; 25 others unsafe to enter.
  • 310 other homes declared safe to occupy.
  • Early damage estimate for the destroyed homes...
    $33 million.
