  The Mountains has a dramatic effect on southern California's climate: storms originating over the Pacific Ocean bring rain to the western slopes, while the eastern slopes remain relatively dry.

Annual Climate...


Average temperatures:
61 to 65 degrees

Precipitation:
10 to 25 inches
 
  The south and west slopes of the mountains are generally the wettest and the north and east slopes are typically the driest.

The High Desert this area is well known for it's extreme daily temperatures along with its little annual precipitation.

Annual Climate...


Average temperatures:
63 to 67 degrees

Precipitation:
10 to 25 inches

During the winter months the high deserts will see temperatures drop below freezing.

The Low Deserts of southern California on average have the hottest annual temperatures.

Average temperatures:
87 to 90 degrees

Precipitation:
5 to 6 inches

During the winter months...The low deserts will typically have daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s.

No wonder the Palm Springs area is an attractive winter destination.

All though there's five primary microclimates in Southern California. There's also "mini" micoclimates embedded in the primary microclimates such as... canyons, mesas and ridgetops.

In these areas... winds, inversions and temperatures can vary the prevailing weather significantly.
