NOAA Weather Radio
are special continuous weather broadcasts from the NOAA's National
Weather Service Forecast offices across the United
States. These special broadcasts air on the high VHF FM
band from 162.400 to 162.550 mhz.
Each broadcasts consists of
weather information of current and forecast information
specially tailored for the area the station serves.
During times of severe or
hazardous weather conditions...normal weather programming is
interrupted to only transmit information about immediate
weather threats and safety information.
When severe weather warnings are
issued for a particular transmitter's coverage area...an
audible weather alert tone is sounded and then followed by the
warning message.
Here in southern California and
the central coast region... ...Much of the region is in
range of at least one NOAA Weather Radio station...but many
are in range of at least two stations.
A typical southern
California weather radio broadcast consists of the
following...
--Current sea and
land base weather conditions --Surf
forecasts --NowCasts (as
needed) --Short Term and
Long Term forecasts --Coastal and Off-Shore
forecasts --Climatic Summaries for select locations
(Usually a.m.
hours) --Hazardous weather
outlooks (as
needed) --Latest NWS
watches, warnings and or advisories (as needed)
Most broadcast cycles run apx. 5 to 15
minutes.
